Frequently Asked Questions
How does laser hair removal
work?
The laser targets the darkness of the melanin pigment in the hair
follicle. Since melanin is only produced in the growth phase of the
hair, the laser must target the hair follicle during this cycle. At
any given time, 20-40% of the hair in a particular area may be in a
growth phase. Therefore, more than one treatment needs to be
scheduled, preferably at 4-8 week intervals. With multiple treatments
we can ensure that all hair follicles are being disabled.
Can all hair and skin colors be treated effectively with laser?
Laser hair removal can be applied to all areas of the body and on all
skin types, even tanned or dark skin, with the Cynosure Elite machine
used by BRAZILya. Unfortunately, the laser cannot remove gray or
platinum blonde hair.
How do I determine my skin type? Will this affect my treatment?
Your skin type will determine the amount of energy (J/cm2) used during
your treatment. Please view the table below to determine what skin
type you are. We will also assess this during your consultation.
Fitzpatrick table of skin types:
Type I Always burns, never tans
Type II Always burns, sometimes tans
Type III Sometimes burns, always tans
Type IV Rarely burns, always tans
Type V Moderately pigmented
Type VI Black skin
Do you offer
complimentary consultations?
Definitely! A consultation is a must for any client considering laser
hair removal. During this consultation we will offer a test spot and
review your treatment options/expectations. Depending on what the
client is looking to treat, it may be possible to have a treatment
performed the same day schedules permitting.
Are laser treatments affordable? Do you offer package pricing?
When you take into consideration the cost of your daily
maintenance for shaving (products and time), we feel that laser
treatments pay for themselves over time. There is also the intangible
cost of confidence and self esteem, which can have a boost when you
know there isn't any unsightly hair.
We offer per treatment pricing as well as a package price based on
buying 5 treatments for the price of 4. Most clients need between 4-6
treatments to get the desired outcome. We can work with you on a
customized package as well during your consultation.
Does
my hair need to be “grown out” before my treatment?
We actually recommend that you shave the area to be treated 3-5 days
prior to your first appointment so we can see hair growth but for all
follow up treatments, shaving the day prior to would be best. We
highly recommend you do not shave the day of the treatment. The skin
is always more sensitive if you have just shaved.
What areas
cannot be treated with laser?
All areas of the face or body can be treated with the laser
that is suited for your skin type. There will be some treatments that
we will recommend you not consider but that will be discussed in the
consultation.
Does it hurt?
While everyone's tolerance is different, some clients may find
treatment mildly uncomfortable. With the technology used today the
treatments are very quick. Any discomfort one experiences is over very
quickly.
How long does it take?
The treatment may take a minute or two (small area- upper lip or
chin), or up to an hour (legs or back). It is important you notify us
what area you are looking to treat when booking your appointment so we
allow enough time for larger areas.
What you
should know for your 1st appointment?
We accept Cash, Interac, VISA, and Mastercard. Sorry, no cheques
allowed.
Please arrive 15 minutes early for your 1st appointment to allow
enough time to check in and fill out the necessary forms to get
started. The forms will require you to communicate any health concerns
or changes, special needs and/or expectations as this is the client's
responsibility in order to receive the best care.
Please allow 24 hours notice for cancellations.
What are your
guidelines on privacy?
Our clients are looking for trusting, professional, skilled, friendly
clinicians and that is what our clients find at BRAZILya. Be assured
we follow privacy guidelines and will not disclose any information
about our clients.
What are the risks involved with laser hair removal?
There is little or no recovery or down time with this treatment.
Clients can return to their normal activities immediately. These
lasers do not injure the dermis so the risks are extremely low. As
with any procedure, you will be given an informed consent form to read
over that explains all the possible risks. Sun exposure or tanning
beds and certain medications could possibly make the skin more
sensitive to the thermal energy of the laser. For this reason, it is
the client's responsibility to inform us of any/all medications and
health history during the consultation. It is also mandatory that all
clients wear protective eyewear (which we provide) while receiving the
laser treatment.
Who will be
performing the treatments?
The treatments will be performed by either Lea or Melanie. Both
members of the team are certified laser specialists and have all the
training necessary to offer you sound advice and knowledgeable
treatment.
What
types of machines are used by your team?
Cynosure's Elite Aesthetic Workstation - It is the market leader and
most comprehensive laser hair removal system available today. Since
it's designed for all skin types, we can treat the broadest range of
clients. In addition, the system is optimized for effective treatment
of facial and leg veins, as well as benign epidermal pigmented
lesions.
The Best of Both Worlds
The Elite removes unwanted hair with unsurpassed efficacy and client
comfort. That's because its revolutionary technology combines two
optimal wavelengths in one system: the 755-nm Alexandrite laser and
the 1064-nm Nd:YAG laser. Since we can switch between wavelengths
during a single procedure, we can select the most appropriate laser
for any given hair or skin type. We can also perform multiple
procedures on the same client during the same visit. As such, we won't
have to compromise performance capabilities—and we don't have to have
two separate laser hair removal systems to ensure both optimal results
and client safety. What's more, we'll be able to administer treatments
in significantly less time than with a single-wavelength product.
Easy, Safe, Effective And Fast
The 755-nm wavelength has high melanin
absorption characteristics and proven long-term results for permanent
hair reduction and pigmented lesion removal. The high-powered 1064-nm
Nd:YAG is the safest wavelength for permanent hair reduction on darker
skin types and tanned skin. It is also the wavelength of choice for
treatment of facial and leg veins—the most common form of vascular
lesions.
The Elite delivers high fluence from large spot sizes-ensuring deeper
penetration, faster treatment sessions and optimal results. Unlike
equipment with predetermined parameters, the Elite includes a variety
of spot sizes and adjustable pulse durations—allowing us to customize
treatments to accommodate our clients' specific needs.
THERMO-Lo - This machine is not a laser. It is a radio frequency
machine that has been around since the 1920's. Originally sold as an
epilator (hair removal machine via thermolysis) it has been found "to
have other benefits that can assist in treating aesthetic procedures.
It handles the removal of Cherry Hemangiomas, Spider Veins, Skin Tags,
Rosacea, Melasma, Sebaceous Hyperplasia, Milia and Various Skin
Lesions"
What is
the difference between IPL and Lasers?
(IPL) Intense Pulse Light is not laser. While pulsed light is
effective for Photo Facial Rejuvenation and has the function for hair
removal, its filtered light is overly superficial to appropriately
reach the hair follicle depth. It is also less safe for darker skin
types. The use of lasers does have unsurpassed efficacy for hair
removal and have been proven to do so clinically for quite some time.
For this reason they can be more costly but their effectiveness and
requirement for less treatments, speak for themselves.
Why are multiple
sessions required?
Laser hair removal works on actively growing hair. With the
exception of scalp hair, most of ones body hair is in the inactive
phase. The percentage of actively growing hairs in most locations is
20 - 30%. This fact alone explains the necessity for multiple
treatments to catch all the growth cycles for hair in a given area.
Generally, treatment sessions are spaced accordingly to allow for hair
to cycle into active growing phases.
Feeling
embarrassed about hair removal?
Rest assured, we all have hair in places we tend to not want to
discuss, you are not unique. Some women feel embarrassed about hair on
their chest, neck, face, feet, foreheads, abdomen, hands, buttocks and
other areas. Hair on these areas is not unique. We know men shave
their face, but men also shave their noses, ears, eyebrows, hands,
shoulders, arms and many other areas of the face or body. Laser hair
removal for men of the back, neck, chest and shoulders are some of the
most requested procedures. Male athletes must remove hair of the body
some way in order to perform. At BRAZILya we will not be surprised to
hear that a man wants his ears and nose treated with a hair removal
laser, in fact we encourage it. We feel that no one should be
embarrassed but rather proud to be doing something about an issue they
feel bothers them.
What is a
Brazilyan/Manzilyan?
Most of us have heard of Brazilian bikini waxing, well now you have
some insight into our name! For those of you who haven't, a full
brazilian bikini procedure is perfect for those who have a preference
for nothing more than a neat strip of hair, or no hair at all. Yes, a
brazilian is that extensive, with some people opting for no hair
whatsoever. These procedures are the fastest growing because many men
and women love the idea of not having to worry about bikini bumps and
ingrown hairs or even maintenance. Generally laser hair removal of the
bikini area takes less than 30 minutes, depending on what exactly will
be done.
Variations of the BRAZILyan/MANZILyan are:
1) outside of the swimsuit
2) outside the suit plus the peri-anal area
3) Everything but a small strip of hair
3) Finally, both men and women sometimes request complete removal of
hair
We are offering bikini line, extended bikini line, BRAZILyan/MANZILyan
and buttocks laser treatments. We can discuss what you would like that
to look like for you during your consultation.
Laser Hair Removal for
Men ??
Call it deforestation, manscaping or de-fuzzing. Whatever you call it,
hair removal for men is gaining popularity in our society. At BRAZILya
we want to see a significant number of men looking for laser hair
removal. Professional athletes, bodybuilders, swimmers, cyclists,
triathletes and many others require a hair free physique. Other men
simply like the idea of feeling more confident free of unwanted hair
that makes them feel uncomfortable. According to an article in USA
Today, men are not only waxing their backs, but also their bikini
lines. According to Newsweek magazine, many men are getting the
equivalent of the Brazilian bikini wax. Men have been removing
unwanted hair for many years with methods other than laser hair
removal. It is not uncommon for men to tweeze, wax or shave their
eyebrows, ears, nose, hands, abdomen; you name it, before discovering
laser hair removal. Many athletes and bodybuilders tell us that one of
the most time consuming and frustrating parts maintaining their
physique for training is not the training, it's removing unwanted
hair. We want men to know that with the technology today, they will
likely find laser hair removal to be much more comfortable than
waxing.
In some cases, men are looking for a reduction in the amount of hair
and don't necessarily want to be totally bare. Some men who feel self
conscious about the hair on their back, chest, legs, hands or abdomen
will be pleased to see the reduction that two or three treatments
might offer.
Remember, your privacy is very important to us. We are very discreet
about all services provided. Whether or not you elect to have laser
hair removal at BRAZILya, do your homework about laser hair removal.
Not all lasers are created equal.
